Marlin ‘Pig’ Wilson
Unknown – December 4, 2022
This eulogy and chronicle is for anyone who has never known what it is like to adopt and love a senior dog. While I do not truly know how old my Marlin was, I wrote this for my own personal peace of mind and healing but also to help inspire anyone who is on the fence about adopting a dog that has a couple more ticks on the old odometer than an 8-month-old puppy. Senior dogs are one of the greatest blessings in life and their appreciation runs deeper than that of any average shelter pet. I hope the story of my Marlin & I will inspire and challenge you to not let a little white on a dog’s face keep you from looking their way. Without further ado…
The date was March 27, 2020. That day will always be one of the greatest days of my life. My life changed forever from the first moment I saw you. My good friend Lauren Pendleton helped orchestrate our meeting when she told me to look at ACT Fresno’s website after I told her that I was looking for a new best friend. I saw you on there and couldn’t stop smiling. My mom & I drove down to meet you and it was love at first sight for me. Your sweet, gentle demeanor instantly crawled its way into my heart. I owe my friend Lauren the deepest debt of gratitude for what she helped me find in my Marlin.
People. From my room with a view, (how I refer to my
kennel) people is what I see. Especially on weekends, I see a lot of people. All sorts of people. Tall people. Short people. Young people. Old people. There are singles and couples, some are families with little kids. People with walkers and canes, people with expensive running shoes;
lots of people.
My name is Boss. Miss Boss. And, I’ve lived here at ACT for a long time.
I am still hopeful that I will someday be able to go to a home with somebody special; sleep in the quiet and warmth of my own forever bed surrounded by my own family who loves me. But for now, this is my home and it is good. I get plenty of food, an igloo with blankets and a room with a view! I am safe and well cared for. Compared to what some of my newly arrived shelter-mates have been through, I have it great.

Read MoreI never thought I could foster. I would never be able to let any of them go to a new home. My heart was just too tender. I could not take the heartbreak when they found a new home. It was something for other people to do. I just loved dogs too much to let any of them go.
Read MoreWe love our adoption photos and our happy endings but these happy endings don’t “just happen.” It takes a dedicated team of caring people. This is the beauty of what we do.
Read MoreDo you ever feel uncomfortable or awkward in new social situations? I sure do. Imagine standing before a judge who can issue a life or death verdict based upon your demeanor. If you shake hands too hard could that be interpreted as aggression? If you don’t reach out to shake hands surely you are timid. We can’t even fathom the possibility of losing our lives based upon our personality but this is the real life and death struggle of shelter dogs. We call these dogs Wallflowers.
